Writing a funeral or celebration-of-life program is one of those tasks that feels impossibly hard at the worst possible time. You don’t need to find the perfect words from scratch — a simple, respectful structure and a few example phrases will carry it. Here are funeral program wording examples for each part of the program, plus a gentle checklist to help you through the planning.
The order of service (a simple structure)
Most programs follow the same flow. You can keep it short — a single folded sheet is perfectly fine.
- Cover: name, dates, and a photo
- Opening / welcome
- Prayer or reading
- Eulogy or remembrances
- Musical selection
- Closing words
- Committal / graveside details (if any)
- Reception / repast information
- Thank-you from the family
Cover wording
Simple and dignified works best:
- “In Loving Memory of [Full Name]”
- “Celebrating the Life of [Full Name]”
- “[Full Name] · [Birth Year] – [Passing Year]”
- “A Celebration of Life for [First Name]”
Under the name, many families add a short line: “Forever in our hearts,” “Loved beyond words,” or a brief phrase the person was known for.
Opening / welcome wording
- “Thank you for joining us today as we celebrate the life of [Name]. Your presence is a comfort to our family.”
- “We gather not only to mourn [Name]’s passing, but to celebrate a life that touched so many.”
Obituary / life summary
Keep it to a few short paragraphs: when and where they were born, family, work or passions, and what they’ll be remembered for. A simple template:
“[Name] was born on [date] in [place]. [He/She/They] is survived by [family members]. [Name] loved [passions] and will be remembered for [qualities]. A [word] friend, [parent/sibling], and [role], [Name] leaves a legacy of [value].”
Readings, poems & musical selections
List the title and, if you like, who is performing or reading it. Choose passages that meant something to your loved one — a favorite verse, hymn, song, or poem. There’s no wrong choice.
Thank-you / acknowledgment wording
- “The family of [Name] wishes to express our heartfelt thanks for your kindness, prayers, and support during this difficult time.”
- “Your cards, flowers, and presence have brought us comfort. Thank you.”
