The 12-Month Wedding Planning Checklist (Free Timeline + Spreadsheet)

- Book the venue and set the date.
- Book the pros that take one event per day: photographer, videographer, caterer, and a planner if you’re using one.
9–7 months out: the core team
- Choose your wedding party.
- Book the florist, band or DJ, and officiant.
- Shop for the dress / attire (alterations take longer than you think).
- Start a wedding website and reserve a block of hotel rooms for guests.
6–4 months out: the details take shape
- Send save-the-dates.
- Order invitations and finalize the menu and cake.
- Plan the ceremony and book transportation.
- Arrange rentals — chairs, linens, tableware — and book the honeymoon.
3–2 months out: firm everything up
- Mail invitations (aim for RSVPs about 3–4 weeks before the day).
- Buy wedding bands and finalize any readings or vows.
- Have your hair and makeup trial.
- Confirm details and headcounts with every vendor.
1 month out: confirmations
- Chase any missing RSVPs and give the caterer a final headcount.
- Build the seating chart.
- Make final payments and write out vendor tips in labeled envelopes.
- Apply for your marriage license.
The week of: hand it off and breathe
- Deliver a timeline to your planner or point person.
- Pack for the honeymoon, break in your shoes, and confirm arrival times.
